Split Rock Lighthouse : A single storm on Nov 28, 1905, damaged 20 ships, fully a third of which were the uninsured property of the steel company fleet. Two of these carriers floundered on this rocky coastline, which some called "the most dangerous piece of water in the world."
In 1907, Congress appropriated $75,000 for a lighthouse and fog signal in the vicinity of Split Rock.
Workers completed the fifty four foot octagonal brick tower the following on July 31, 1910. Oren Young and his assistants lit the incandescent oil vapor lamp and set the bivalve Third Order Fresnel lens in motion for the first time. Situated on top of Split Rock, the lens boasted a focal plane of one hundred and sixty eight feet, the highest of all lights on the Great Lakes.
Split Rock is the most scenic and also the most photographed lighthouse on Lake Superior.

Duluth 2008 Fireworks : The annual 4th of July fireworks display is always fun to watch and this year was particularly exciting. With more than 3500 shells lighting up the sky for 20 minutes, this years 4th of July fireworks display was the largest in Minnesota.
Because the 4th fell on a Friday this year and the fact that the weather was exceptionally beautiful, the crowd of spectators was some of the largest ever.

Tall Ships : Duluth-Superior has a rich maritime history and the rendezvous of the Tall Ships this weekend in Duluth triggered an interest that is deep rooted in everyone that has come into contact with the shores of Lake Superior and its unique nautical past.

From the early 1800's to the 1920's, these wooden sailing ships traveled the waters of the worlds oceans and inland seas. Before the age of electricity and modern navigational devices, these vessels were the lifeline from Duluth to the outside world. Fur traders and immigrants arrived in the midwest on board these ships, stepping off with hope of a new life in a new world. Like today, America was the land of opportunity.

The Duluth Maritime Festival was organized to celebrate and remember the past with the arrival of three replica historical ships. The Pride of Baltimore II, the U.S. Brig Niagara, and the Schooner Madeline. Schooners and brigantines represent a part of the areas nautical history filled with adventure, danger, and excitement.

Although most of these types of ships served many years of service, there are many others that lay on the bottom of Lake Superior, victims of the violent storms that leave many sailors with a healthy respect for the big lake, even today.
