northernimages > Jay Cooke is one of the most geographically interesting of Minnesota State Parks. Bedrock formations of the St. Louis River, are pitched to a 45 degree angle by ground pressure. Jay Cooke State Park was established in 1915 when the St. Louis Power Company donated 2,350 acres of land for that purpose.
northernimages > The forest around Split Rock Lighthouse became a winter wonderland after a two foot snowfall blanketed the area duing a December storm.
northernimages > This shack served it's purpose many years ago, and now stands in silent watch over Lake Superior. It's working days are over, but, like an old grandpa, it represents an important heritage to those who pass by.
northernimages > 2004 was a cool springtime in the Northland with a return to normal rainfall. The trees began to bud about 2 weeks late and the loons also nested about 2 weeks later than normal. I watched this pair start their nest on May 10th, and the baby hatched on June 10th. The baby loon in these pictures was 1 to 2 days old when the they showed up in front of my lake home to show off their new born.
