northernimages > March is a fantastic month to watch nature. Daylight hours are rapidly expanding, wildlife is beginning to move and plants are starting to wake up from a long winters nap. You can't help but notice the changing seasons with a springtime walk along the shoreline of Lake Superior. The colors, climate, and fresh air join together to shout out that a new season has begun.

In this picture, shore ice melts away along with the fading light of day in one last display of winter beauty.

As I stood on the ice crust, I thought how amazing water really is. It is the only substance that is found naturally on earth in all three forms: liquid, gas, and solid and that there is actually the same amount of water on earth now as there was when the earth was created.

Another fascinating property of water is that when it freezes, it becomes lighter, which is why ice floats on water. If God hadn't created water with this unique characteristic, ice would sink and eventually lakes and oceans would freeze solid, making life impossible on earth.

God outfitted this little planet of ours with every provision we need and than gave us an ability to enjoy Him through the work of His creation.

For He draws up the drops of water; they distill rain into mist, which the clouds pour down and drop on man plentifully.
Also can any understand the spreading of the clouds, or the crashing of His canopy?
Behold, He spreads His light on it, and He covers the bottom of the sea. (Job 36)

northernimages > Lake Superior has it's own beauty even on gray days. Every year, during late March, the anticipation of warm weather and the green colors of springtime make one a little depressed when the days are gray. We tend to want to stay inside on the inevitable cold overcast days of the transitioning seasons. Such was a day as this. Although the weather was not inviting, I found myself on the beach, observing the last of the shore ice and enjoying the fresh smell of the damp morning air.

There were no sightseers to be found and even the seagulls were grounded from their daily routines by the brisk easterly winds.

As I set up my tripod, digging the legs into the mushy shore ice, the cold pinched my hands, reminding me that even though it was 32 degrees, I still needed to wear the gloves, which I had left in the car. As I focused the camera on the rocks, waves, and ice, I was reminded why I love this Lake. It has a mood of it's own, and even the gray days have a wonderful beauty, you just need to look for it.

When I knelt down in the slush to focus the camera better, I was immediately slapped in the face with a cold spay, and ended up wearing a gallon of Lake Superior's 3,000,000,000,000,000 gallons of fresh water. It was the last picture of the day, and I drove home refreshed, in more ways than one.

As in life, it takes more effort to find beauty in the gray days. However, if we focus on what's good, we tend to forget about the not so good days of our lives.

All of God's creation points us to Him for rest in troubled times:
Psalm 91:1 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall rest under the shadow of the Almighty.
northernimages > Blizzard Ice
After the most recent blizzard, I put on my snow shoes for the first time this season and walked along the ice covered cliffs of Lake Superior near Tettegouche State Park. It was a perfect day, with clear blue skies and the sun glimmering off the ice encrusted rocks and trees.
northernimages > Crystal Cathedral
As winter draws to an end and Lake Superior begins to give up the last of it's ice crust, the remaining ice decorates the shoreline like a jeweled necklace. Ice crystals refract light in multi faced shimmering halo's forcing one to stop and look at the awesome wonder of God's created beauty.

As the season of ice and snow gives way to migrating birds and baby fawns, so, spring time brings new life to the soul.
